Community activists in the district capital plan to start traditional seal hunting near the city, the Chukotka news agency reported on April 27.
The “Royyryn – Family” community has begun to prepare for the spring season. During the May holidays, community members plan to set up a yaranga near Tavaivaam village. At the same time, community members are preparing for a seal hunt.
“For several years we have been given permission to capture akiba and bearded seals, but we have not used them. In total, we have 23 people in our community; Two hunters recently appeared who know how to hunt seals. Our retirees really want to sear the fat and meat; With the skin you can sew necessary things. In addition, now in Anadyr there are five experienced hunters of marine mammals from the neighboring territorial community “Lorino”, who share the secrets and peculiarities of hunting with our men.”said Vasilisa Ruzanova, president of the Royyryn family TSO.
Vasilisa Ruzanova agreed on the support of the TSO “Lorino” with the president of the community, Alexei Ottoy. Her deputy Vladimir Pina and other marine mammal hunters help Anadyr social activists with methodological recommendations. Lorin’s sea hunters will help their Anadyr colleagues in the manufacture of traditional tools – harpoons and zakidushki.
“Royyryn – Family” still does not know when they will be able to start hunting the marine animal. If possible, they will try to catch seals on the ice; If that doesn’t work, they will hunt in open water.
Let us remember that seal hunting is currently practiced in nine countries: the United States (above the Arctic Circle in Alaska), Canada, Namibia, Denmark (only in autonomous Greenland), Iceland, Norway, Russia, Finland and Sweden. Most of the world’s seal hunt takes place in Canada and Greenland.
