The President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoko Embalo, expressed this Saturday his regret over the arrest in Portugal of a prosecutor allegedly caught with drugs, and stressed that the case is being examined by the judiciary of the two countries.
Speaking to journalists upon his arrival in Bissau from Portugal, where he attended the 50th anniversary celebrations on April 25, Sissoko Embalo commented on the arrest at Lisbon airport of prosecutor Eduardo Mancaña on the 21st, allegedly with hashish.
“I regret that the magistrate found himself in such a situation. Those who must judge cannot fall into such a situation, but as you know, the president does not judge, but I was comforted by the statement of the High Council of Public Judiciary. The prosecutor’s office on this matter,” Embalo said.
The Supreme Council of the Judiciary of the Ministry of State decided to suspend Eduardo Mancaña, who was on leave to study for a doctorate in Portugal, and ordered the initiation of disciplinary proceedings.
Guinea’s president said the case “causes resonance” in Guinea-Bissau “more than in Portugal,” where he said the detained prosecutor was receiving treatment “appropriate for his status.”
“This is nothing unusual, there have been judges in many countries around the world who have been involved in something similar,” said Sissoko Embalo, stressing that he does not “applaud” when Guinea-Bissau’s image is at stake.
Embalo stressed that the case is being considered between the judicial authorities of Portugal and Guinea-Bissau, and took the opportunity to recall that recently in the neighboring country “a ship with drugs was caught, but without noise,” he emphasized.
Regarding the fact that a group of Guinean citizens opposed their presence at the April 25 celebrations, Sissoko Embalo said he was not concerned and that his focus was on Guinea-Bissau.
Among other adjectives, the group called Embalo a dictator.
“I’m not a dictator, I’m a disciplinarian. I care about failed people. I only care about the people of Guinea-Bissau, to whom I have restored their self-esteem. My goal is to achieve respect for the State of Guinea-Bissau. “, Embalo emphasized.
By the way, he announced that on May 1 he will take part in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the former colonial prison Tarrafal in Cape Verde, and on the 30th he will receive the new President of Senegal, Bassira Diomaye Faye, in Bissau.
