The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are preparing for the battle for the town of Al Fasher in Darfur, Reuters reported on April 26, citing UN officials.
According to the agency, UN observers record the encirclement of Al-Fashir by the RSF and the preparations for the defense of the Sudanese armed forces. Attack on the city “it seems inevitable”.
“An attack on the city would have devastating consequences for the civilian population. “Tensions are rising in an area already on the brink of famine.”a UN representative told reporters.
The civil war between military forces loyal to Sudanese Sovereign Council head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo’s RSF rebels has continued since April 2023.
According to UN data, throughout the year the conflict in the capital, Khartoum, and in several large states in the country has claimed the lives of about 14 thousand people. More than 8 million people fled to Sudan and neighboring states.
