The President of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the largest opposition party), Ossufo Momade, said this Monday that the state must pay compensation to the victims of the shipwreck in Nampula on April 7, which killed at least 98 people.
“The government must compensate the families of the shipwreck victims and must also be held accountable for its negligence. We call for immediate action by the National Human Rights Commission as well as the Ombudsman to initiate an investigation and hold the state accountable.” He said this in a statement to Ossufo Momade after visiting Nampula over the weekend.
“On this occasion, we visited the owner of the ship and his sailors in prison, who, in our opinion, should not be in prison, since at the time of the incident they were only providing assistance to the distressed population and seeking refuge on the Island of Mozambique. Accordingly, we listened carefully to the reasons for the sinking and left a promise to create conditions for their legal assistance,” he noted.
