UK should follow Australia in legalizing MDMA for mental health, says lead professor

According to a leading British professor, “there is no reason why the UK should not follow Australia’s lead and offer MDMA and psilocybin – key ingredients in hallucinogenic mushrooms – to treat some mental illnesses.”

David Nutt, professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, said the Therapeutic Goods Authority of Australia (TGA) decision Friday was “very exciting” and if the UK did it would be “a denial of science and patient needs”. don’t do the same.

In his own research, Professor Nutt found that MDMA and psilocybin are “much safer than previously claimed” while there is “a lot of new evidence supporting their effectiveness.”

According to him, the same results would have a positive impact on the decision of the TGA.

As of July 1, Australia will become the first country to offer psychedelic-containing drugs on special prescriptions approved by a psychiatrist.

The TGA said it would allow the use of MDMA for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psilocybin exclusively for treatment-resistant depression. substances.

Professor Nutt, who has devoted 20 years of his life to the study of psychedelics for the treatment of mental health, told I There is a “growing need for new therapies in psychiatry” because existing drugs are “limitedly effective” and up to 50 percent of patients respond poorly to them.

“In the UK, we must support this new approach for compassionate use in patients who have not been helped by other therapies, especially as much of the new research here has been done by my Imperial College group,” he said.

“To resist would be a denial of science and the needs of patients. [and] would be a moral or political decision, not a scientific or clinical one.”

The TGA said it recognizes “the current lack of options for patients with certain treatment-resistant mental illnesses.”

Only psychiatrists licensed by the TGA under the government’s Authorized Prescribing Program may prescribe medication.
