The activity of the Cotopaxi volcano has increased significantly in recent days, warned the Ecuadorian volcanologist Patricia Motes, reports Prensa Latina on February 3.
Specialists are constantly monitoring the Cotopaxi volcano, whose ash today affected various areas in the southern part of the capital of Ecuador. According to Motes, the release of gases and ash has increased significantly in recent days. The volcano spews ash to a height of one and a half kilometers.
The National Risk Secretariat of Ecuador issued a yellow alert for the areas surrounding Cotopaxi, including Pichincha, the province where the country’s capital is located.
Located in the Andes mountain range 45 kilometers from Quito, the Cotopaxi volcano rises to 5,897 meters above sea level. Its previous awakening was on August 14, 2015 after the volcano had been dormant for 138 years.
With the episodes recorded in recent months, the activity is expected to remain the same for weeks or months. However, any change could pose a potential threat to the thousands of Ecuadorians living in the area.
Experts warn that the eruption could reach the south of Quito, Latacunga, Mejía and Rumiñahui, where some 25,000 people live.
