Fashion and perfume designer Paco Rabanne has died at the age of 88.
The death of the designer of Spanish origin, originally from the Basque Country, was confirmed today by his fashion house Puig.
He achieved worldwide fame for his textile creations, eccentric fashion designs and his perfume brand.
The death of Francisco Rabaneda y Cuervo, his birth name, in France was confirmed by a spokesman for the Spanish group Puig, who run the Paco Rabanne label, which he left two decades ago.
A statement posted on Paco Rabanne’s official Instagram account read: “Paco Rabanne would like to honor the memory of our visionary designer and founder, who passed away today at the age of 88.
“As one of the most important fashion figures of the 20th century, his legacy will remain a constant source of inspiration.
“We are grateful to Monsieur Rabanne for creating our avant-garde heritage and defining a future with unlimited possibilities.”
Together with fellow French designers Pierre Cardin and André Courrèges, the iconic designer helped disrupt the status quo of Parisian fashion at the time.
He was born in the Basque Country in 1934, before fleeing the Spanish Civil War that raged from 1936 to 1939, at the age of five to France with his mother, a master tailor at Balenciaga.

For his debut haute couture collection in 1966, he introduced “12 unwearable dresses made of modern materials”, including a chainmail style mini dress made from aluminum plates.
His fashion house also enjoyed commercial success with his line of perfumes, and his debut fragrance, Calandre, is still available today.
With its distinctive gold-topped bottle, Lady Million remains a bestseller and is widely available.
