The BE coordinator said this Monday that she hopes that the parties will use the pre-election campaign of the European elections to make clear what they stand for for the European Union, and noted that the decisions taken by Brussels affect the Portuguese.
“This campaign must serve, and it is important that it serves, that every party can express its views on Europe, and the Left Bloc wants to make this campaign a campaign on issues that concern people,” said Mariana Mortagua.
The BE leader spoke to reporters a few minutes before presenting BE’s list of candidates to the European Parliament at the Constitutional Court in Lisbon.
“When we talk about the welfare state, when we talk about war and peace, when we talk about climate change, when we talk about industrial policy, about economic growth, about wages, we talk about the decisions that are made in Europe every year . Every day decisions are made in Brussels that affect us all at every moment of our lives,” he said.
Mariana Mortagua believes that “people in Portugal should also know when they are going to vote that they are voting for candidates who protect them every day in these decisions.”
“Let the European campaign be a campaign about how Europe affects us and how we can defend a Europe of peace, solidarity and community. This will be the effort and commitment of BE in this election,” he said.
Referring to the head of the list, Catarina Martins, Mariana Mortagua said her party represents “the most competent candidate, the most capable of participating in these elections” as well as the “best list” made up of “independent people who know their goals.” and who wanted to join the Bloc and become its ally in this great challenge.”
“A group of people who don’t really give up on the idea that Europe can be a solidarity project, a social project, a project that helps each of us live better, and that means the welfare state, that means peace, that means fighting climate change “, – he said.
The bloc leader also noted that “BE does not advocate leaving the eurozone” and considered that this is an untimely debate and it is necessary to respond to the “huge challenges” facing Europe, which “range from climate change to war, to the need to respond to social condition.”
“Of course there are euro rules that need to be changed to allow public investment, to allow environmental transformation, to allow the welfare state, social network investment. This is the debate we want to have, we want to have the debate on the Central European Bank rules that penalize people on home loans, this is the debate we want to have because this is the debate that matters to people’s lives every day “, he said.
Also, in a conversation with journalists, the head of the BE list, Katarina Martins, emphasized that “in Europe, much of what will happen to the collective future is being decided.”
“There are those who have given up on any collective project, there are those who have given up on the welfare state, on the idea of community, on anything that can build a strong democracy with rights for all people. We at BE. , have not given up on this idea,” he noted.
The bloc’s former coordinator believes that the European elections on June 9 will be “a dispute for democracy, for a social state, for a response to the great challenges” of today.
Regarding the result the party hopes to achieve in these European elections, Katarina Martins said she expects “the best possible result” and “even better” if the party increases its representation in the European Parliament.
In the last European elections in 2019, BO managed to elect two MEPs: Marisa Matias and José Gusmão. This year, former leader Catarina Martins tops the list, with José Gusmão again in second place.
