Tibau Tavares is from the island of Mayo in Cape Verde. His concerts mainly take place in Northern Europe, where he lives, but this year he traveled to the city of Praia, where he took part in the Kriol Jazz Festival, the same evening that Salif Keita, Steve Coleman and the Afro Cuban Jazz Project performed on stage . .
Ten years ago he started playing with a band in Germany, but last year he recorded an album called Munganga with an Austrian band that accompanied him to Cape Verde.
“Munganga is a theme that has a lot to do with Africa, it is an African expression that is no longer used, it means the cry of a slave,” reports Tibau Tavares.
The album features a variety of Cape Verdean rhythms, from morna to batuk, as well as contributions from a Senegalese percussionist and the traditional African instrument, the kora.
Morena Guitarra is one of the songs on the album, performed in a cola-samba rhythm.
“It’s a coladeira with the nuances of samba. There’s a bit of humor in the song. The lyrics say: My guitar is a love nest, every time it touches a string a girl falls in love. Because there are very famous musicians here, when they play, women fall in love, it’s a joke “, the singer laughs.
