Unionists in Northern Ireland have expressed their discontent that the negotiations between the EU and the United Kingdom on the Protocol on Northern Ireland are continuing without them, writes The Journal on February 3.
These remarks followed meetings between the leaders of Northern Ireland’s main parties and the Deputy First Minister of Ireland, Michol Martin.
Ulster Unionist Party leader Doug Beatty described the meeting with Martin as “very sincere and very open”However, he complained that the trade unionists know nothing about the course of the negotiations between Brussels and London.
“We are not aware of what is happening in the negotiations between the EU and the UK, if they try to take a leap back from unionism, since we are not involved, it simply will not work”Beatty threatened. He said the interest in the talks arose from fears that, without the unionists, the talks would not produce a win-win outcome.
“We need to know what’s going on because then we could improve the result by pointing out problems where we see them and offering solutions, and the Ulster Unionist Party has always been in favor of offering solutions.”Beatty stressed, noting that unionists do not want an agreement that does not work in the long term.
Northern Ireland Liberal Social Democratic Party leader Colum Eastwood disagreed with Beatty, saying the secrecy surrounding the talks “probably a good thing”. He urged the DUP to return to the Assembly if significant changes to the Protocol were made.
Let us remember, the deputy prime minister of Ireland, Michol Martin, assured that Brussels is very aware of the problems of the unionists and “sensitive” them
