Activist Manahel al-Otaibi, a women’s rights advocate in Saudi Arabia, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison on terrorism charges, according to rights groups, which are calling for her “immediate and unconditional” release.
The verdict was handed down in secret in January, and the decision became known only after a group of UN rapporteurs requested information on the case, Europa Press reports.
According to Amnesty International (AI), the charges against the activist relate to wearing “indecent clothing” as measured by local authorities and demands for social media reforms, including the end of a regime that forces all women to have a male guardian.
