US universities under fire amid clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli protesters

University This Wednesday, California Los Angeles became the scene of violent clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli students. “Many protesters and counter-protesters behaved peacefully, but the behavior of some was absolutely shocking and disgraceful,” acknowledged Gene D. Block, the university’s president. A week ago, more than 200 students supporting the Palestinian cause set up a huge camp there, surrounded by wooden fences and walls.

Tensions grew as time passed and in this environment the inevitable happened. It is not known exactly who started the hostilities. Television images and videos posted on social media showed protesters and counter-protesters wielding sticks and iron rods and attacking each other. More peaceful was the police intervention at Columbia University in New York, which was occupied by pro-Palestinian students. About a hundred protesters were detained, but they did not put up much resistance. Rector Minouche Shafik demanded intervention, according to whom the protest was led by “persons not associated with the university.” Police will remain at the university for several days “to maintain order and make sure no camps are set up,” Shafiq said.

California and Columbia were not the only American universities to experience problems. Authorities were called to other educational centers in other states in North America to dismantle camps that had lasted several days. There were some minor skirmishes, but nothing compared to what was seen in Los Angeles. The pro-Palestinian movement, started by students at North American universities, is reaching Europe, although no serious incidents have yet occurred.

AND
“THEY DIDN’T KILL ANYONE”
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei criticized the crackdown on student protests. “University students did not cause destruction, did not kill anyone, did not set fire anywhere, did not break glass, and yet they are treated this way,” he emphasized.

34,568 dead
This Wednesday, the Hamas Health Ministry presented a new estimate of the number of deaths in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war on October 7: 34,568.

TRUST
The US Secretary of State told a group of Israeli protesters in Tel Aviv this Wednesday that the Gaza truce proposal presented to Hamas is “very reasonable” and that the Palestinian group “should say yes.”
