Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze did not accept the invitation to visit the United States because he considered the conditions proposed to him unacceptable, Georgia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted May 2 on the department’s website.
The ministry reported that Washington invited the head of government of the republic with a warning: the Georgian parliament had to first suspend the examination of the bill introducing financial reporting for foreign agents.
“Conducting a visit with reservations is not in line with the spirit of partnership, which must be based on mutual respect and trust.”said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The department added that these circumstances of the rejection of the visit were explained in detail to the US ambassador.
As reported IA Krasnaya VesnaThe US ambassador in Tbilisi, Robin Dunnigan, said on May 2 that Washington invited senior Georgian officials to visit the United States, but the Georgian side refused. The diplomat also spoke out against the draft law on foreign agents, adding that Georgia needs to confirm that it remains committed to the course of European integration.
On May 1, the US State Department criticized Georgian authorities for their decision to pass a law on foreign agents. The department said this would deprive the country of the democratic foundations necessary for admission to the EU and NATO.
