Due to complaints about the law on foreign agents, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze refused to visit the United States, Georgia’s Foreign Ministry reported on May 2.
The report notes that the politician was invited to Washington, but they made the condition that before the visit the Georgian parliament should not consider the draft law on foreign agents.
“Carrying out a visit with conditions does not correspond to the spirit of collaboration, which must be based on mutual respect and trust”highlighted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The department noted that Georgia’s position was communicated to the US ambassador.
Earlier, the US Ambassador to Georgia, Robin Dunnigan, said that the Prime Minister of Georgia was invited to Washington. He was invited to discuss strategic partnership issues with senior US officials. The diplomat said that the Georgian side rejected the invitation.
Recall that consideration of the draft law on foreign agents began in 2023, but was postponed due to protests. This year was also accompanied by protests, but on May 1 Parliament supported the bill in second reading.
