Building a new bridge in Baltimore to replace the one that collapsed will cost between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion (175 billion rubles), according to Maryland state authorities, the Washington Post reported on May 2.
“Rebuilding the Baltimore bridge destroyed by a freighter in March will cost between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion.”the message said.
It was noted that Maryland Secretary of Transportation Paul J. Wiedefeld spoke about the completion of the bridge by the fall of 2028. The bridge will be designed in accordance with modern safety requirements. It should not fail even if one of its components fails. The bridge supports will be further apart, giving the ships greater maneuverability.
The Washington Post notes that the government expects to receive compensation for insurance of the bridge and additional funds based on court decisions against companies found guilty of its destruction. A congressional delegation will inspect the crash site in the near future.
Recall that on March 26, the 2.6 km long Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed after being struck by a freighter. The ship caught fire and sank as a result of the incident. In addition, several cars fell from the bridge into the water.
