The remains of 30 Soviet soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War near Leningrad were recovered by search engines during the Voronovo-2024 training expedition, Irina Metelkina, president of the Vologda Search Engines Association, said in a comment to TASS on May 2.
The Voronovo-2024 expedition is taking place in the Voronovo and Karusel areas of the Kirov district of the Leningrad region. Search engines from the Vologda region and 12 other Russian regions participate in it. In the area of the Voronovo area, from September 9, 1941 to January 21, 1944, fierce battles took place, during which the Red Army unsuccessfully tried to dislodge the entrenched fascists from the heights. The losses of the Red Army here amounted to more than 34 thousand people.
“To date, the remains of 30 Red Army soldiers have been recovered. There are other findings. The death medallion of soldier Pyotr Vasilyevich Petrov, born in 1904, originally from the Tosnensky district of the Leningrad region, was discovered and the search for his relatives was announced. The medal “For Courage” was found.said Metelkina.
By the prize number you can determine the name of the fighter. As Metelkina explained, the search for her relatives will be announced in the near future, when data arrives from the Central Archive of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The expedition placed great emphasis on teaching young researchers the methods of military archaeology. According to Metelkina, the volume of uncovered soil is very large. The work is carried out in swamps and on heights where plowing was carried out in the 1950s.
“The guys who came for the first time are immersed in military archaeology, they realize the horrors of war and understand what they are doing.”said Metelkina.
He added that search engines from different regions are mobilizing to recover the remains of soldiers who died defending the Homeland during the Great Patriotic War. The remains of the raised Soviet soldiers will be solemnly buried on May 8 at the New Maluksa war memorial.
