To reduce the risk of flooding, the authorities of the island region will allocate additional funds to clean several rivers and strengthen the banks, the press service of the government of the Sakhalin region reported on May 3.
The water bodies of the Sakhalin region are characterized by seasonal flooding and flash floods, which from time to time cause flooding and inundation of territories. The reasons are the melting of snow as a result of a sharp rise in temperature, as well as powerful cyclones. The situation may be aggravated by river congestion. Flooding and flooding pose a particular danger in densely populated areas; They cause damage to citizens and industrial and agricultural companies.
“To protect the interests of citizens, we made a decision: to allocate funds for works on the Susuya, Krasnoselskaya and Mayakovskogo rivers. Design solutions have already been developed. In some areas, specialists will dredge and reinforce the banks. In others, emergency restoration work will clear riverbeds of fallen trees and debris. These measures will reduce the risk of flooding.”said Alexey Belik.
Also in the coming months, hydrologists will examine the Kolka and Uyunovka rivers. Based on the results of environmental and engineering studies, design and estimation documentation for works to prevent flood risks will be developed.
