The Spanish government has decided to stop presenting the National Bullfighting Awards this Friday. Since 2011, this award has been included in the set of awards of the Ministry of Culture for various fields of art.
According to the report, there will be no award for bullfighting this year and the ministry in charge has already taken steps to cancel the award. ElDiariowhich quotes government sources.
The award included a prize of 30 thousand euros, which is 10 thousand euros higher than the winners in the Literature category.
The government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, president of the Spanish executive between 2004 and 2011, has committed to recognizing bullfighting as an “artistic activity.” The prize was awarded in the last year of Zapatero’s rule, and bullfighting came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture.
The ministry notes that the decision “is an accurate reflection of the priorities and feelings of the community” whose concern for animal welfare is “growing.” “Only 1.9% of the population attends bull shows,” they say.
Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun from the Sumar party has always taken a very critical attitude towards bullfighting.
“The majority of Spaniards are becoming increasingly sensitive to animal rights,” he said.
