Heavy rains that have been falling continuously in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul since Monday have already caused the death of four dozen people.
According to Civil Protection, another 74 people were missing and 24,250 were left homeless. Of the state’s 496 municipalities, 235 have already been hit by heavy rains that will continue over the next few days, while more than 170 roads were blocked this Friday due to slope failures and bridge collapses, making the work of rescue teams very difficult. .
The most serious situation is in the Taquari River Valley, in the center of the state, where river levels have risen by more than 15 meters and left several municipalities isolated, without water, energy and communications.
In Porto Alegre, the Guaiba River rose two meters above flood level this Friday, flooding entire neighborhoods.
In less than a year, four climate events have killed more than 100 people in Rio Grande do Sul. But state Governor Eduardo Leite said these floods would unfortunately be the most destructive yet.
