The next national convention of BE will take place on May 27 and 28, Katarina Martins, coordinator of the blockists, said this Saturday after a meeting of the National Council of the party that made the decision.
“The National Board has decided to convene the National Congress of the Left Bloc. The XIII National Congress will take place on May 27 and 28 in Lisbon. The convention process starts today,” Katarina Martins told reporters at the end of the meeting. meeting of the highest body between the congresses, held this Saturday in Lisbon.
The 12th National Congress of BE, the last major gathering of the party, took place on May 22 and 23, 2021 and was held for the first time in the Porto area, more specifically in Matosinhos.
When asked by journalists whether she would be a candidate for a leadership position again, Katarina Martins replied: “I am giving you the conclusions of the National Council today, the leadership that exists today. As you can see, this doesn’t make sense. to talk about the candidates today. We will have other opportunities to do so.”
“In the Bloco de Esquerda (BE), the congress processes are very active, we are going to have some debates within the party to create orientation proposals and very soon this movement will move forward, we will be here for all questions about this, present projects for the Bloc, for the future. That’s the way it should be. Today I am the coordinator of the political commission that is in power, with all its feelings, with the majority and the minority, and this is what I represent,” he said, despite the insistence of journalists.
After the unsatisfactory results of the last legislative elections, in which BE ceased to be a third political force – it lost half of the votes and was reduced to five deputies – the internal opposition even asked to preempt the national congress, but it will be held according to the usual calendar, that is, with a difference of two years.
Then, at the end of April last year, BE discussed its strategic course at the IV National Conference on the reorganization of the party and the opposition of the blockers to the absolute majority of the PS.
