The Brussels City Planning Service plans a major renovation of Brussels’ 100-year-old Albert Bridge, also known as the Leuven Bridge, The Brussels Times reported on May 4.
The project is reported to take about two years to complete. The Albert Bridge connects Scherbeek with Brussels.
Leven Bridge is a 100-year-old structure, built between 1923 and 1925. The railway service has expressed concerns about the safety of the main railway routes connected to Antwerp Airport, Mechelen, Liège and Leuven. It should be noted that problems with the stability of the bridge were identified in 2014.
As part of the reconstruction, the road will have to be reinforced and widened to 6.7 meters to accommodate public transport. The planned cycle path will be widened to two meters wide. In addition, in the future they plan to build two new lanes for the tram line.
