This Sunday, Benfica won the Women’s Basketball League national title in the last and decisive game of the final, beating União Sportiva 67-51 in the Azores.
Having won the first game away with a score of 53-51, the Reds allowed themselves to play a draw at home, in a match that ended with a score of 56-55 in favor of Unian Sportiva. However, Benfica eventually became champions of the Azores, thus winning their third national title.
The Eagles were superior from the first to the last minute, both in attack and defense, and knew how to take advantage of the weaknesses and nervousness of the Azores players.
Benfica played much better in the first period, finishing with an eight-point lead (21–13) thanks to good performances from Rafaella Monteiro and Isabella Quevedo.
In the second quarter, Unian Sportiva abused their losses, and Benfica took advantage of this and increased their lead on the scoreboard. The Reds mercilessly took advantage of the Azoreans’ mistakes and went into the break with a 37-25 lead.
After a rest, the home team continued to resist the attacking “festival” of the “reds” without a proper response, who continued to be effective in long throws and were always more aggressive in the “pintado”.
At the start of the fourth and final period, the advantage of the Lisbon team was already 21 points (31-52), after the third quarter, in which the home team scored only six points.
Unian Sportiva even showed a good reaction in the final 10 minutes, taking advantage of some arrogance on Benfica’s part, but the change in attitude over the period was not enough to prevent Benfica from claiming a 67-51 victory.
The Eagles win the national title for the third time after winning the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 seasons, while Sportiva failed to win a fourth trophy.
