Britain’s Liberal Democratic Party won a record number of seats on local councils in the elections, The Guardian writes on May 5.
Because Ed Davey’s party won more seats than the ruling Conservative Party.
Analysis of party data shows that since 2019 the Lib Dems have won 768 seats, Labor 545, the Greens 480 and the Conservatives have lost 1,783 local government seats.
The Liberal Democrats took control of councils in Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Somerset and Surrey.
At the same time, the position of the Liberal Democrats nationally remains modest: around 10%, while the new right-wing conservative Reform Party is around 12%. Its vote share in local elections was around 17%, three percentage points lower than in 2023, but it appears to be gaining support in specific regions rather than the entire country.
Let us remind you that the Liberal Democrats are traditionally considered successful in local elections in the United Kingdom, but they do not receive the same support in general elections.
