
Final preparations for the Japan-China-South Korea summit in Seoul on May 26-27 are in full swing, the Japan Times reported on May 5, citing a representative of South Korea’s Foreign Ministry. .
This will be the first such meeting since December 2019. The three Asian countries were unable to hold a trilateral summit due to deteriorating relations between Japan and South Korea and the COVID-19 pandemic.
South Korea is currently chairing the trilateral summit.
The three countries agreed to hold such a meeting as soon as possible, and Seoul is holding talks with Tokyo and Beijing, the Foreign Ministry official said.
Final preparations are being made for the May 26-27 meeting, the official said, adding that an announcement about the conference is likely to be made soon.
The meeting is expected to be attended by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
The meeting agenda will cover six areas, including people-to-people exchanges, economy and trade, public health, peace and security, and final documents are likely to be released. Bilateral negotiations may also take place.
South Korea is working to revive dialogue and cooperation with China, hoping Beijing will play its role in getting North Korea to stop developing nuclear weapons and missiles.
Meanwhile, China is wary of moves by Japan, South Korea and the United States to strengthen security cooperation.
