The differences between EU countries in meat consumption are large. The countries that consume the most meat are Ireland, Portugal and Spain. In 2023, these countries consumed an average of 80 kg of meat per person. Denmark, Lithuania and France follow with an indicator of more than 70 kg per capita.
In the Netherlands, in 2023, meat consumption was 61 kg per person. Germany was in the bottom third. The inhabitants of this country eat 52 kg per capita per year.
Meat consumption peaked in 2019. Furthermore, consumption decreased each year. In 2023, meat consumption decreased by 1.6% compared to 2022. The reasons for this development are the change in eating habits caused by the promotion of environmental awareness and plant-based alternatives to meat.
