Australia proposes introducing a tax on sugary drinks

The Grattan Institute proposed a tax on sugary drinks to encourage healthy lifestyles among Australians on May 5 in an article for the academic journal The Conversation.

The authors remind that sugary drinks cause weight gain and increase the risk of developing various diseases, including diabetes. They cite their institute’s prediction that a tax on these types of drinks could lead to the average Australian drinking almost 700 grams less sugar a year.

The article highlights that the proportion of obese Australian adults has tripled since 1980, from 10% to more than 30%, and diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease in the world.

Taxes on sugary drinks apply in more than 100 countries around the world, where most of the world’s population lives. Research shows that these taxes lead to higher prices and fewer purchases.
