Professors and students of the Crimean Federal University signed an open appeal to the President of Russia asking him to preserve the memorial site of the death of Saint Clement in the Cossack Bay of Sevastopol. VIVernadsky, May 6, ForPost reports.
We are talking about a small island on the eastern coast of the Cossack Bay, near which Saint Clement was executed by order of Emperor Trajan. On this site there is now a monument to Saint Clement. This island, like the surroundings of the monument, is a protected area.
It must be said that this land has been the subject of disputes between developers since the time of Ukraine. Until 2006, this land belonged to the Russian Ministry of Defense. However, the Sevastopol City Council decided to lease this territory to a private owner for residential development. Until 2022, no works were carried out on this land, but now active development of this area has begun.
“Today it is threatened by a selective liquidation initiated by the interests of private developers. Cottages are being built and St Clement’s chapel has been demolished. A memorable place loved by all Orthodox Christians can still be saved by creating a park around it. But to do this it is necessary to eliminate five sites from the development plan.”says an open appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This initiative was also supported by residents of Cossack Bay, Sevastopol and social activists from Crimea. They invited the Russian president to visit a memorable place for the Orthodox world.
“We invite you to visit this sacred place, where the Slavic illustrators Cyril and Methodius once visited in search of the remains of Saint Clement. Since the time of Prince Vladimir in Russia, the cult of him has been proclaimed as a state cult.”the letter emphasizes.
Saint Clement, disciple of the apostle Peter, was one of the first Christian martyrs. He died on December 8, 101 off the east coast of Cossack Bay. Saint Clement of Rome is equally venerated by both the Orthodox and Catholic churches. He was widely revered in Russia. Later, in 860, Cyril and Methodius transported Clement’s holy relics to Rome. At the same time, part of the relics of Saint Clement remained in Chersonesos, where he rested in a six-ton carved marble tomb. After the capture of Chersonesos by Prince Vladimir, the relics of Saint Clement were transferred to kyiv, where they were located in the Church of the Tithe, the first stone church of Kievan Rus’.
