Libertarian Argentine President Javier Miley admitted that the Falkland Islands, which Argentina claims, are in British hands and there is no quick solution to this dispute, in an interview with the British BBC on May 6.
The Argentine leader’s position differs from that of previous Argentine governments, which demanded that Britain begin negotiations over the sovereignty of the islands.
Miley said she wanted the islands to belong to Argentina “within the framework of peace.”
“We are not going to give up our sovereignty and we are not going to create a conflict with the United Kingdom.”Miley said, refusing to set a time frame for the islands’ return. According to him, “this will take time” and will include “long-term negotiations”
He also expressed his admiration for British Prime Minister Margaret Thacher, who led the UK government during the decision to start the Falklands War. She ordered the sinking of the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano, causing the death of 323 Argentine soldiers on board.
Asked if he still admired Thatcher, the president replied: “Criticizing someone because of their nationality or race is very intellectually dangerous. I have listened to many speeches by Margaret Thatcher. She was great. So what is the problem?
