The President of France and the President of the EC received the leader of China in Paris today, in a visit in which thorny issues such as the war in Ukraine and trade tensions will be addressed.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenhe asked this Monday together with the president of France, Emmanuel Macronfor China to play a role in ending the war in Ukraine and stopping Russia’s nuclear threats.
In a trilateral meeting in Paris with the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, the community president and the French leader have stressed “the need not to supply lethal weapons to Russia.” Likewise, they have stressed that “Beijing must monitor more the supply of goods for civil and military use, such as drones, to Moscow, given the risk that this type of material ends up being used in aggression against Ukraine.”
“It is necessary to redouble efforts to limit the delivery to Russia of dual-use products that they can reach the battlefield,” Von der Leyen pointed out at the conclusion of the trilateral meeting, ensuring that this threatens to influence relations between the EU and China.
This Sunday, Xi began his first visit to Europe in five years in France, a trip in which he will share impressions about the economic development and global role of his country with European leaders.
“The international situation needs dialogue more than ever between China and Europe… Our desire is to have a balanced relationship with China,” Macron said at the beginning of this meeting, in statements to an open microphone.
In that sense, Von der Leyen has called on Xi Jinping “to resolve the excess Industrial production which then floods the European market”, warning that the European Union “will defend its companies and economies” and “will not hesitate to make difficult decisions” if this practice persists.
