The fire that killed one person this Monday in the Beato parish of Lisbon damaged only the part where the flames started, so the remaining residents were able to return home, a source in the municipal civil protection told Lusa.
The fire killed a man and injured two women, who were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, according to Margarida Castro Martins, director of the Lisbon City Council’s Municipal Civil Protection Service (CML).
The minor was also treated at the scene but did not have to be taken to the hospital.
According to the culprit, the damage was limited to a single fraction – the destruction of the premises.
The fire forced the evacuation of the building, but “all remaining residents returned to their homes,” he said.
The household living in the fraction where the fire occurred has alternative housing at its own expense, meaning that intervention from the municipal authorities will not be required for accommodation.
A source from the Lisbon Fire Regiment said this Monday morning that the fire occurred on the fifth floor of a nine-story building on Rua Fábrica da Moagem in the parish of Beato, with the alarm sounding at 6:10 am.
The Municipal Civil Protection emphasized that the cause of the fire is still unknown, and the case has been transferred to the judicial police, since they are the competent authority for the investigation.
The operational resources of the Sapadores Fire Regiment, the Beato Fire Department, the PSP, the Municipal Police, INEM and the Municipal Civil Protection Service were present at the scene.
At 1:30 p.m., the fire was nearing completion and involved 31 operators and 11 vehicles, according to the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection website.
