BE’s parliamentary leader said this Monday that it is possible to “set Portugal on the path to good environmental examples” by announcing a series of bills, including pushing back the carbon neutrality target to 2045.
The left bloc began its parliamentary days this Monday, which will take place in Madeira, with a visit to Praia Formosa, the largest in Funchal, next to which two real estate projects (apartments) are planned, one from the Pestana/CR7 Group and the other from a Welsh family.
“We wanted to start these journeys here so that, starting with a bad example of what private and public investment shouldn’t be, like with this real estate project that shouldn’t exist, to draw attention to the fact that it is possible. to set Portugal on the path of good examples,” BE parliamentary leader Fabian Figueiredo said in an address to reporters.
Fabian Figueiredo was accompanied by BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua, members of the Assembly of the Republic and regional deputy Roberto Almada.
The leader of the blockist group said that this construction “jeopardizes the future, access to the beach”, as well as the problems of climate change, stressing that “Portugal, the autonomous region of Madeira, should not be seen as a piece of land on the edge of a planted sea, always open to piracy from financial, real estate and extractive gluttony.”
“Portugal can and must have a green-blue economy that prepares for climate change and at the same time creates skilled employment. This presupposes clear rules. Therefore, in this roadmap, to position Portugal as a good example of climate action, smart public and private investment, we will propose moving the carbon neutrality target from 2050 to 2045,” he said.
Fabian Figueiredo added that to achieve this goal, the country must use its resources to invest in renewable energy, free public transport, energy efficiency “and, above all, give priority to smart public investment.”
On the other hand, the BE parliamentary leader indicated that the party will present a draft resolution to protect 30% of Portugal’s maritime zone by 2026, noting that this is an international commitment of the country that has not yet been transferred. into national law.
Investments in the Portuguese Sea “must meet environmental and social justice criteria” and create skilled jobs, the blocker stressed, rejecting “past mining, mining and oil export projects.”
“All the environmental regulations that we propose to Portugal to adopt are always aimed at preparing Portugal for the challenge of climate change, for the energy transition, while at the same time ensuring that private and public investment […] it has to be a skilled employment generator that keeps people here, that employs graduates, people with better training, that helps them find jobs here and encourages them,” he stressed.
BE will also introduce a bill that will require all car parks with an area of at least 1,500 square meters to be covered with solar panels, half of the area, the leader of parliament emphasized.
Blockers will also propose shutting down projects of national interest, Fabian Figueiredo said, arguing that “they serve above all to promote luxury tourism and real estate projects that violate environmental criteria.”
“And we want Portugal to be an example at European level in terms of the jobs it creates, but also in its commitment to respond to the biggest threat to our collective security – climate change,” he insisted.
