Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been hospitalized since Sunday in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, where he was admitted with an acute case of erysipelas, a bacterial skin infection. The former president should be transferred to a hospital in the Brazilian capital Brasilia as soon as possible, according to one of his sons, federal lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro began feeling symptoms of an erysipelas crisis, such as fever and pain, on Saturday while traveling from Brasilia to Manaus, where he attended an event held by the Liberal Women’s Party chaired by his wife Michelle Bolsonaro. On Saturday he went to the Santa Giulia hospital in the center of the capital Amazonas, underwent treatment and was discharged, returning to his hotel.
On Sunday, the symptoms worsened and Jair Bolsonaro returned to the same hospital where he was admitted. This Monday, according to Eduardo, the former president responded well to the antibiotics prescribed by doctors, so the family thought about transferring him to the capital of the country, where he now lives.
In November 2022, after losing that year’s presidential election in which he was seeking re-election, Jair Bolsonaro had already suffered a very acute case of erysipelas. At that point, in addition to the fever and severe pain, his legs were so swollen and injured that he could not wear pants for a long time until the infection subsided.
Apart from these recurring outbreaks of Erisipelas, Bolsonaro is also still facing the consequences of a stab wound to the stomach that he received on September 6, 2018 during a campaign walk through the streets of Huiz de Fora in Minas Gerais while he was running for the presidency. which he eventually won. Because of this, Jair Bolsonaro, now 66, has already had to undergo four delicate surgeries and other less invasive medical and surgical procedures in hospitals in Sao Paulo and Brasilia.
