
Maldives is concerned about the decline in the number of tourists from India, writes the Economic Times newspaper on May 6.
With the number of Indian tourists visiting the Maldives declining amid bilateral tensions, the archipelago country’s tourism minister has called on Indians to contribute to the country’s tourism-dependent economy.
Maldives Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal highlighted the historic relationship between his country and India.
“We have history. Our newly elected government also wants to work together. (with India). We always defend peace and a friendly environment. Our people and government will extend a warm welcome to arriving Indians. “Our economy depends on tourism.” – he said.
Backlash has been directed at the Maldives following derogatory comments about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media by three Maldivian officials after Modi posted photos and videos of the pristine Lakshadweep Islands off the western coast of the India.
Dozens of Indians, including many celebrities, have canceled their reservations and plans to visit the Maldives.
