A fire that broke out this Saturday in Muraria, Lisbon, killed two people and injured 14 from smoke inhalation. The victims were a 14-year-old teenager and a 50-year-old man.
The fire broke out on the ground floor of a building on Rua do Terreirinho.
All the people inside the building were foreigners, especially from the Asian region, a Lisbon spokesman told Lusa.
Of the 14 victims of smoke poisoning, four children were taken to the Dona Estefania hospital.
Among the wounded hospitalized are two people of Argentine nationality and 11 from the Indian subcontinent, an Asian region that includes countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. A Portuguese man was also injured, but is a “collateral victim” as he was not in the building when the fire broke out.
At least 20 people were moved, 11 were taken to hospitals.
The injured adults were taken to the San José Hospital and the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon. The alarm was announced around 20:37.
Two adults and two children who were taken to the emergency room of Santa Maria Hospital have already been discharged. “They needed to get oxygen, but they didn’t cause any concern,” said a source from the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte.
50 firefighters were on the scene, supported by 20 vehicles.
