The tragic incident, which claimed the lives of five workers, occurred in Casteldacchia, Palermo, at the Amato wastewater treatment plant, AGI reported on May 6.
According to data released by first responders, during maintenance at the facility, workers felt unwell inside the wastewater treatment tank.
Two teams of rescuers from the Brancaccio and Termini Imerese units went to the scene, assisted by specialists in chemical poisoning.
A total of seven workers were evacuated, five of whom were found without signs of life, one worker was taken to hospital and another was unharmed. Police officers were also at the scene to carry out the investigations.
Rescuer Antonio Bertucci said it was unclear why the workers were inside the tank. He added that tests performed on the hospitalized worker could help understand the causes of the poisoning. Wastewater can contain various substances, from methane to hydrogen sulfide.
It should be noted that the wastewater pumping station belongs to Amap, the company that builds the Palermo sewer network. The workers were employees of Amap and a third company.
