Germany could provide financial support to Turkish municipalities that are members of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), according to a report by the German think tank Foundation for Science and Politics (SWP), Karar writes on May 7.
According to the report, Germany could provide financial support to opposition-led Turkish municipalities in implementing climate and infrastructure projects such as rail transport and digitalization.
In the report, German analysts criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s political approach. They also expressed the opinion that in the last local elections in the country on March 31, 2024, the Turkish leader “was punished by voters due to economic problems, increased corruption and nepotism”.
The document also highlighted the importance of Germany intensifying its relationship with CHP municipalities. “CHP will increase its political and economic weight in the country through the municipalities it will govern for five years.”the report says, adding that these municipalities, where 62% of the country’s population lives, are Turkey’s economic engine.
