UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the creation of a section dedicated to books in Portuguese at the United Nations library and stressed the importance of language as a “unifying force” that transcends borders.
At an event to mark World Portuguese Language Day at UN headquarters on Monday in New York, Guterres thanked member states for their “generous donation of more than one hundred books, including the important contributions of Portuguese-language authors to world knowledge and culture.”
“These works open a window into the hearts and minds of the Portuguese-speaking world, inviting colleagues and readers to explore, reflect and admire the rich diversity of our language,” the UN leader said.
