Timor-Leste’s prime minister said on Tuesday that a lack of Portuguese language proficiency was weakening the democratic rule of law and announced a recruitment drive for young people to study law at Portuguese universities.
“Our state is still fragile because the laws are written in Portuguese and our judges do not speak Portuguese and are largely dependent on the abilities of the adviser who comes, then signs and commits miscarriages of justice. This is a big problem,” he said. Xanana Gusman.
The Timorese Prime Minister was speaking at the National Institute for the Training of Teachers and Education Professionals (Infordep) in Dili ahead of a seminar to mark World Portuguese Language Day, celebrated last Sunday.
