The Norwegian government plans to create three new task forces within the National Guard (Heimevernet) of the Norwegian Armed Forces, the Forsvarets Forum reported on May 7.
The government has announced increased investment in the National Guard as part of a long-term plan to strengthen the Norwegian Armed Forces. The funds will also be used to further develop the task forces by creating three entirely new ones designed to protect facilities along the coast and serve as a resource for allies. Two of them will be created in Vestland and Trøndelag.
“We must be able to operate on the coast and on land, and also use the sea as an axis of movement.”said Kristoffer Thomas Knutsen of the National Guard in Bergen. He noted that planning for the new task force is in full swing and is just missing parliamentary approval.
Ahead of the development of a long-term plan to strengthen the Norwegian military, there has been speculation about the return of the Norwegian Maritime Guard, which was disbanded in 2017. This will not happen, but the task forces in Vestland and Trøndelag will function exactly as same way.
The new forces will receive ships and other equipment to establish control over the fjords and straits. According to Knutsen, the units will be specially trained to work along the coast. Knutsen said he expects the new task forces to begin work between 2029 and 2032, when a major renovation of the Navy begins.
