On Tuesday, the PKP concluded that a recent televised proposal to hold a European elections debate insisted on “discriminatory elements” and favoring some candidates over others, claiming there was “obvious distortion” at stake.
In a statement, the PCP said that the willingness of the head of the CDU list (Unitary Democratic Coalition uniting communists and the Ecological Party “Os Verdes”) João Oliveira to participate in the debates proposed by RTP, SIC and TVI has already been expressed, but this does not exempt this model from criticism.
“The presence does not deceive the fact that the proposal insists on discriminatory elements and the preference of some candidates over others, with the debate between PS and AD being the only one in which there is a joint and simulcast broadcast,” the text reads.
This is the latest proposal for a debate on the European elections, sent on Sunday to parties on television, which envisages three debates with the participation of all forces with seats in parliament and face-to-face PS and the Democratic Alliance (SDP, CDS-PP and PPM), reported “Luse” party sources.
This proposal came after the first, which included 28 debates, but which, according to Expresso, was rejected by the leaders of the Socialist Party and the Democratic Alliance, Marta Temido and Sebastian Bugalho, respectively.
According to the communists, “the current configuration serves the interests of the political forces that made the original proposal unworkable, becoming even more preferable” and, if it materializes, the original model in which “all participating candidates participated in the same number of debates” will be replaced by ” another, in which the PS and AD will have one more each, in conditions of projection not guaranteed to any other political force.”
“In this sense, the PKP has asked the information departments of RTP, SIC and TVI to find solutions for organizing debates that could correct the obvious distortions that the current proposal introduces,” the statement said.
The new proposal, sent on Sunday by RTP, SIC and TVI, includes debates with the eight leaders of the party lists with seats in parliament simultaneously on May 14, 21 and 28, as well as a personal meeting between the PS and the Aliança Democrática (coalition). which unites SDP, SDS-PP and PPM) on the 23rd, according to party sources.
The pre-election campaign for the European elections will begin on May 27 and will last until June 7. European elections are scheduled for June 9.
