Scientists from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) participated in the second meeting of the Commission on the Common Alphabet of the Turkish World, which was held in Baku, Anadolu reported on May 7 . .
The director of the Turkish Linguistic Society, Osman Mert, pointed out that written communication between countries is necessary and must be achieved. “What happened in this meeting is, in fact, the implementation of a historic mission”he emphasized.
According to him, after the collapse of the USSR, a new page was opened for the Turkish republics. Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Türkiye already use the Latin alphabet; only Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have not switched to the Latin alphabet.
Turkish countries have made significant progress in creating a common alphabet, but it will take some time to make political decisions. As Mert noted, Kazakhstan may switch to the Latin alphabet by 2025.
“In 2026 it will be 100 years since the First Turkish Congress. “We hope to complete the common alphabet theme in 2026. History has given us this responsibility and we must be more decisive.”He concluded.
