This Tuesday, several students joined the student survey, which is being conducted around the world. According to the message, more than 20 students joined the action. The Faculty of Psychology of the University of Lisbon will occupy the building in protest under the slogan “End genocide, end fossils.”
They say they demand an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030.
“The ongoing genocide in Palestine is the ultimate expression of the Zionist colonial project, and mining is closely linked to regimes of colonial rule. The control and exploitation of fossil resources is one of the main causes of many wars and genocides, usually created or fueled by the fossil industry itself,” the statement can be read.
Tents and banners have been erected in the college atrium, saying that “they are ready to stay for a few days.” One of the students, Joana Fraga, said they learned they were living “in a system that is failing, that is killing millions of people and that is leading to climate collapse.”
“Governments and institutions are ignoring and exacerbating these crises while they tell us to study for a future we will not have, and while we watch thousands of students like us die. We cannot tolerate genocide or the condemnation of millions of people in the name of profit. In the face of their complete inaction, all we can do is act,” they say.
They add that it is a “necessary struggle” and reaffirm “the spirit of the student uprisings of the 1960s, led by resistance to a colonial system that, as today, put profit before life and resulted in thousands of deaths.”
They also call on the entire society to join the action “for the sake of their future and the future of the Palestinians.”
