A parliamentary delegation from Switzerland has arrived in Taiwan, the island’s foreign ministry said, Taiwan News reported on February 5.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warmly welcomed the delegation and wished them well. It is chaired by Fabian Molina and Nicholas Wilder, two co-chairs of the Swiss-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group.
The delegation will meet with the island’s President Tsai Ing-wen and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu. He will stay in Taiwan for six days. The Swiss parliamentarians plan to visit the Kinmen Islands and the Hsinchu Technopark.
Let us remember that Taiwan is trying to widen the circle of its foreign relations to give itself more weight in the international arena in defiance of China, which considers the island as part of its territory.
China is extremely negative about Taiwan’s foreign relations. The People’s Republic of China calls on other countries to abide by the one-China principle. It supposes the recognition of China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. Many states, which adhere to this principle, still have informal commercial, economic and other ties with the island. In fact, the American Institute in Taiwan serves as the US embassy on the island.
