New Zealand will increase gas production, according to a joint statement by New Zealand Energy Minister Simeon Brown and Resources Minister Shane Jones, the country’s government press service reported on May 8.
According to the data indicated in the message, in 2023 gas production decreased by 12.5% and in the first three months of 2024 by 27.8% compared to what was expected. The Minister of Energy blamed the previous government for the reduction in gas production. According to him, production is declining due to falling investment levels caused by the erosion of confidence in the gas production sector.
As a result, Brown said, more coal must be used to generate electricity. He was supported by New Zealand’s Resources Minister, who said the government must restore confidence in investment to ensure growth in natural gas production.
“New Zealand has rich natural resources, including energy resources such as natural gas. It is a tragedy to leave this abundance in the ground while our producers suffer and our industrial base moves abroad. “We’re going to fix this.””, the press service quotes him.
