About one and a half million wild pigs have infested the entire territory of Italy and brought with them infections, riots and theft from garbage containers, writes The Globe and Mail on May 7.
As the article says, shameless animals with a tendency to overeat, wild boars, penetrate from the thickets of the forest to Italian cities, where they find the freedom to feast wildly on garbage dumps and idly surrender to the call of lust, uncontrollably gorging on food waste.
“These creatures disrupt traffic, terrorize children, pedestrians and cyclists. “Adult males weigh 100kg or more, so encountering such a monster, even in a car, is like crashing into a brick wall.” write FT.
Additionally, African swine fever was found in wild boars. The outbreak of the disease immediately caused panic among producers of prosciutto (smoked ham) and other sausages.
The government of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni responded by ordering the Italian army to take up arms and shoot rabid pigs as if they were rabid dogs.
“The goal of the Italian army is to eliminate 80% of the wild boar population in five years. Rome seriously fears for the fate of the sausage industry, whose total value amounts to 8 billion euros.” write FT.
