Some Dutch ministers have criticized protesters who set up tents on the Amsterdam University campus to protest the war in the Gaza Strip, the NL Times reported on May 7.
The outgoing Minister of Education, Dijkgraaf (D66), stated that “sad to see”that the police had to intervene to restore order at the university. “Universities are great places for discussion and dialogue. Expression of dissatisfaction and emotions is allowed. But do it in a way that is safe for everyone.”– he said.
Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf called “sad” police intervention. VVD leader Dilan Jeşilgöz-Zegerius called it a shame for the people who demonstrate.
He said he was upset that police had to drag protesters away. “I really thought it was terrible. “I don’t understand what’s going on with these people.”– she said.
Recall that Dutch police arrested 140 protesters in Amsterdam, four of whom are still in custody.
