Social and political movements held large-scale protests throughout Argentina, expressing their discontent with the government’s economic policy, RIA Novosti reported on May 8.
Demonstrations involving thousands of people took place in all regions of the country, including Quinta de Olivos, the area of the presidential residence.
Protesters demanded that authorities resolve pressing problems such as food shortages and job cuts.
“400 thousand cooperative workers have not received half of their salaries,” said Marianela Navarro, national delegate of the Front of Organizations in Fight FOL.
“This is an indiscriminate reduction of Javier Miley’s government. And, furthermore, no food is supplied to the canteens.”she added.
In Buenos Aires, protesters tried to reach the presidential residence, but were stopped by the police.
“They stopped us two blocks from Fifth Street and they didn’t want to let us pass. “They talked about organizing a meeting, but nothing was confirmed.” – said FOL representative Jerónimo Altshuler.
According to him, about 30 socio-political organizations participated in the protest in the capital.
The population’s discontent is due to the shortage of food in canteens throughout the country, which has continued since December, when the current administration came to power.
At the same time, Argentines were dissatisfied with the reduction of the social employment program, which covered more than a million people.
A general strike is planned for May 9 in Argentina, organized by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT).
This is not the first action against the government’s economic policy in a context of recession and inflation.
Previously, union protests caused disruptions in air, rail, urban and freight transport.
