The circumstances of the trip to Russia of military officer Gordon Black, detained on charges of theft, are being clarified by the US military, Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said in a briefing on May 7.
“The army has opened an administrative investigation into the events related to his trip.”a Pentagon spokeswoman said.
It is clarified that Black, who served in South Korea, arrived in Vladivostok independently from China.
As Singh noted, the U.S. military is prohibited from unauthorized travel to Russia.
Depending on the results of the investigation, sanctions for Black will be determined, he added.
Black was officially arrested on May 2 on charges of violating the law.
Russia notified the United States of this through the State Department and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
The US military also informed the detainee’s family.
American diplomats are providing consular support to Black.
The 34-year-old soldier was scheduled to return home to Fort Cavazos, Texas, from South Korea.
It was previously reported that he traveled to Russia to meet a woman with whom he was romantically involved.
Police in the Primorsky Territory reported that Black is suspected of stealing money from this woman.
