On Tuesday, Chega decided to open a criminal case against the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, for “treason against the Fatherland” and the Constitution. The trial follows Marcelo’s statements about possible reparations to former Portuguese colonies.
“The President of the Republic deserves our respect, and therefore these mechanisms should be used in exceptional cases. The seriousness increases when two countries have already approached Portugal asking for reparations. This will leave a mark on future generations,” says Andre Ventura.
According to President Chega, “Portugal does not betray itself, it loves itself.”
“He cannot say that Portugal is a criminal,” he concludes.
To continue the Chege criminal case, the positive opinion of the PS and SDP is necessary, but these parties have already opposed this initiative.
