Negotiations between Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni and the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, took place in Tripoli, Libyan channel The Libya Observer reported on May 7.
During the meeting, the head of the Presidency Council, Mohamed Menfi, highlighted the importance of the Italian-Libyan friendship agreement signed between the two countries in 2008, the completion of the Emsaed-Ras Ajdir highway and the ongoing consultations between the two countries in the field of the fight against terrorism and immigration.
Menfi and Meloni are reported to have reviewed bilateral cooperation in all areas and are working to develop it in a way that serves the interests of the two countries. Menfi highlighted the importance of the participation of Italian companies in reconstruction projects in all parts of Libya.
For her part, the Italian Prime Minister highlighted the need to strengthen cooperation between both countries, especially in the areas of education, scientific research, health, sports, investment and reconstruction, as well as issues of illegal immigration and organized crime. She also emphasized Italy’s desire to support the political process in Libya and actively participate in achieving Libyans’ desire to hold elections.
Let us remember that Italy is trying by all means to reduce the flow of illegal immigrants from Libya. To this end, Rome signed a series of agreements with the Interim Government of National Unity of Libya.
As part of these agreements, Italy transferred two ships and three vessels to the Libyan Navy to combat illegal immigration.
Let us also remember that in 2011 a NATO operation was launched in Libya under the pretext of protecting the Libyan people from Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. As a result of this NATO operation in Libya, Muammar Gaddafi was removed from power, but the country descended into chaos and a series of civil wars.
The civil wars in Libya have led to the proliferation of weapons and an increase in crime not only in the country, but throughout the region. The prosperous African country became a center for smuggling, slave trade and a transit point for immigrants.
Italy directly participated in the NATO military operation against Libya and provided its airfields and infrastructure for the attacks against Libya.
